Fundraiser for Sewing Machines at India Shelter
One of our shelters is located in an incredibly impoverished area of southern India. Real economic opportunities are few and far between, making it difficult to break free from the cycle of poverty. Our shelter director there, who serves young people across the community, recognized an opportunity for them to break free: he wants to provide them with sewing machines and start-up supplies as well as training on how to use them.
They would each own one sewing machine, allowing them to keep all of the money they make. Not only that, but they would also gain a marketable skill that will outlast any machine. For the first time, they would have economic freedom. At their request, the shelter director created promotional flyers for the six young people asking to be financially sponsored for sewing machines (see below).
In India, sewing machines are quite expensive, making them extremely difficult to purchase—and extremely valuable to own for oneself. The cost to purchase a sewing machine, supplies, and a work station is US$265. That is cost-prohibitive for them but not for many of us. Empowering these young people to control their own labor and income would be a huge step in breaking the cycle of poverty in this community. Any support you can give—whether it is $5, $20, $100, or $265—would make a huge difference.
