FACTORS Behind orphanhood
Kids with Special Needs in Shelter
A significant portion of the kids have special needs. In poorer communities, stigmas and costs associated with special needs, and even physical disability, often result in the abandonment of the child. This shelter provides them with lodging, food, medical attention, education, and a loving social environment.
About 40 percent of kids are in the shelter because because either they or their parents are infected with HIV/AIDS--another stigmatized condition in China. The older kids, near 15 and 16 years old, have moved out of the shelter to go beyond the offered public education. They are attending centers of higher education, such as seminary or private music school.
Prospects
Considering China's current political climate, we don't expect their attitude towards orphanage regulations, childcare, and religious charity to shift. Fortunately, there are legal channels to still provide for these kids, and we have been pursuing each of those avenues. From the structural and cultural factors behind orphanhood to crises such as coronavirus, our mission in China, and everywhere, is to love the unloved and the forgotten.
