FACTORS Behind orphanhood
Most of the kids' parents—if not dead from gunshot wounds, disease, or overdosing—are either too poor or too drug-addicted to raise their kids. These factors are present across the country.
Proportion of Kids by Shelter Location
Individual tribes, who often represent the main ethnic demographic of a given state, are in civil war against the national government. This and the violent treatment of the Rohingya people have resulted in the displacement of many people. Many of the surviving parents either are in jail for selling opium—Myanmar is in the Golden Triangle—or are living in refugee camps. The camps are dangerous, serve little food, and provide no meaningful education. Many of the kids in our shelters comes from one of these backgrounds.
Prospects
Ongoing civil strife, drug issues, and our shelter's reputation for providing a quality education and a loving environment has contributed to the growing numbers.
The civil war in Myanmar has been going on for more than 60 years. Periods of peace and negotiation often devolve into conflict. No one in- or outside of Myanmar expects to see a real resolution anytime soon. Thankfully, our presence in Myanmar is growing in size and quality of impact.
