OUR PRESENCE: 1 SHELTER NUMBER OF KIDS: 40
FACTORS Behind orphanhood
In the Taiwan shelter, the children do not actually live in the shelter itself. It is located in a small, rural farming village. Families are poor, with not much extra money or time to truly invest in the children. Most kids live with their grandparents, for two particular reasons. The first is the parents abandon them to try to live their own life, outside of responsibility. The second reason is that the parents go to the big cities to earn a living and send it back to their families. The second reason is more common than the first, with grandparents overwhelmed with raising another set of children, even in their old age.
Prospects
The state of the Taiwanese village is rough. A majority of the children in the area abuse substances, learning this behavior from the adults in their life. Many children do not have much hope for their future, due to the schooling in the village being subpar. With no parental guidance, these children learn desperation early in life.
The goal of the shelter is to improve the children’s lives. After school at the shelter, free tutoring is provided by the shelter directors. Kids also are fed a full, home cooked meal often, if not every night. Art and music classes are also taught to the children at no expense, allowing the kids to work on a project and be proud of the final product. Guest art and music teachers are brought in weekly to encourage the kids even more. Grandparents are involved by open house nights, where the children’s art is displayed throughout the shelter. Additionally, the Bible is taught to the students often, getting them excited about various stories in the Scripture and showing them the love of Christ.
